Worklog Fields
Worklog Fields let you add custom metadata fields to the Log Time form, enabling teams to capture additional context alongside each time entry.
What Are Worklog Fields?
By default, when a user logs time they fill in:
- Jira Issue
- Time Spent
- Date
- Description (optional)
- Time Category (if configured)
- Billing Account (if configured)
Worklog Fields extend this form with custom fields your organisation defines - for example:
- Client name
- Work item type (billable / non-billable)
- Cost centre code
- Project phase

Field Types
| Type | Use Case | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Free-form notes or identifiers | "Cost Centre: CC-1042" |
| Number | Numeric-only values | Reference or ticket number |
| Single-Select | Pick exactly one option | "Billable / Non-billable / Internal" |
| Multi-Select | Pick one or more options | Multiple applicable tags on one entry |
| Checkbox | Boolean flag | "Overtime: Yes/No" |
Single-Select and Multi-Select replace what was previously one combined "Dropdown" type.
Reordering Fields
Drag and drop fields in the Worklog Fields list to change their display order in the Log Time form.
Editing and Deleting Fields
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Edit | Click the Edit (pencil) icon → modify → Save |
| Delete | Click the Delete (trash) icon → Confirm |
Deleting a field removes it from the Log Time form but does not delete historical worklog data that used this field.
Filtering and Grouping by Worklog Fields
Worklog Fields capture extra context on the entry itself when someone logs time. Whether a given custom field is also available as a filter or Group By option in Reports can vary by field - check the report's filter and Group By pickers directly rather than assuming every custom field is exposed there.
Tips
- Keep the number of required fields low - too many mandatory fields discourage accurate time logging
- Use Dropdown fields for fields with a controlled vocabulary to ensure clean, filterable data
- Discuss field requirements with your finance and HR teams before creating billing- or HR-related fields
