Creating a Portfolio
A Portfolio is a named collection of Jira issues grouped and visualised across multiple views (Table, Gantt, Board, etc.). You define the scope using manual filters or JQL.
Creating a New Portfolio
- Portfolio Management → click New Portfolio
- Enter a Portfolio Name
- Click Filter to define scope:
- Manual Filter - use dropdowns to select Projects, Issue Types, Statuses, Assignees
- JQL Filter - write a Jira Query Language expression for complex scope
- Click Apply to preview matching issues
- Click Save - the portfolio appears in the sidebar under Portfolios
Important: Save immediately after creating. Unsaved portfolios are lost when you navigate away.
Manual Filter vs JQL
| Method | Best For | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Manual Filter | Simple project/status/type scopes | All open Stories in Project A |
| JQL | Complex cross-project queries | Epics due this quarter across 3 projects |
Example JQL Scopes
-- All active epics across a program
issuetype = Epic AND status != Done ORDER BY priority DESC
-- High-priority items due this quarter
priority in (Highest, High) AND due >= startOfQuarter()
-- All in-progress work across multiple projects
project in (PROJ-A, PROJ-B, PROJ-C) AND status = "In Progress"
Editing Portfolio Scope
- Open the portfolio
- Click Settings (gear icon)
- Modify the filter or JQL
- Click Save
Sharing Portfolios
Creating, viewing, and deleting your own portfolios is open to everyone - there's no role gate on the portfolio list. To share a specific portfolio with others, open its Share modal and assign one of four granular roles - View, Edit, Edit generators, or Control - to Everyone, specific Users, a Jira Group, or a Jira project role. The creator always holds Control, and Jira admins can manage any portfolio regardless of its share settings.
Deleting a Portfolio
Settings → Delete Portfolio → Confirm (requires Control access on that portfolio)
Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
