FAQ
General
Does GitConnect for Jira support Bitbucket or Azure DevOps? No. GitConnect for Jira currently supports GitHub and GitLab only.
Does GitConnect for Jira support GitHub Enterprise Server or self-managed GitLab? Yes. GitConnect for Jira supports GitHub.com and GitHub Enterprise Server (self-hosted), as well as GitLab.com and GitLab Self-Managed. Self-hosted instances connect using a personal access token; OAuth sign-in is only available for GitHub.com and GitLab.com.
Setup
Do I need to be a Jira admin to connect a repository? You need the Manage Integrations permission in GitConnect for Jira, which a Jira site administrator can grant to specific users or groups without making them full site administrators - see Permissions.
Should I use OAuth, a personal access token, or webhook-only? OAuth is the quickest option when it's available (GitHub.com and GitLab.com only). Use a personal access token for self-hosted GitHub Enterprise Server or self-managed GitLab, or if you'd rather control token scope and rotation directly. GitLab also offers webhook-only, for syncing activity without storing credentials in GitConnect for Jira.
How long does the initial sync take? It depends on the size of the repository and its commit history. Most repositories finish their initial sync within a few minutes.
Usage
Can developers create branches and pull/merge requests without leaving Jira? Yes, from the Issue Activity panel on a Jira issue - see Creating Branches, Pull & Merge Requests. This requires write-level access on the connected repository.
Can I search for issues based on their git activity? Yes, using GitConnect for Jira's five custom JQL functions - see Searching with JQL Functions.
What is Signals? Signals is GitConnect for Jira's engineering delivery dashboard, combining Jira issue data with git activity across General, Teams, and Backlog views - see Signals: Engineering Delivery Dashboard.
What happens to development data on Jira issues if I disconnect a repository? Previously indexed commits, branches, pull/merge requests, pipelines, and deployments remain visible on Jira issues. Disconnecting only stops new activity from syncing.
Does GitConnect for Jira modify anything in my GitHub or GitLab repository? Only when you explicitly use it to create a branch or a pull/merge request from Jira. Otherwise, GitConnect for Jira only reads repository data to display it in Jira and to process Smart Commit commands.
